Happy Newsletter Day

The Show Must Go On, as Cosmo Brown put it. So we've knuckled down and hit the quote books this week, slapping together a whole new batch of games to play. And then put on another pot of java to churn out all the latest stats from the week prior and get 'em in the newsletter. Sure, maybe we wanted to escape to the Bahamas for a bit with a beach read or two. But no, no, my friends…we here at CineQuote are committed to getting the games and news out to you on time, with a thud at the screen door, and with as little redactions as possible. Okay, we’re confusing ourselves with our own metaphors now. On to the numbers!

Last Week’s Highlights

Highest Win Percentage

83%

Lowest Win Percentage

17.6%

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD took some Tylenol and rolled into work a couple weeks shy of retirement, netting a win rate of 83%. If you go back to old newsletters you’ll see that 83% is pretty low for claiming top spot of the week. Still, most people were able to play trial and error with Die Hard movies to land on the right one, which was number four in the series. Do you know how many Die Hard movies they’ve made total? The number may shock you. It’s actually seventy-nine. Seventy-nine Die Hard movies. That’s a lot of Yippie Kay Yays. Ok, it’s actually five Die Hards total. But some days it feels like seventy-nine.

Most Aced Movie

25.1%

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD also had the highest percentage of Aces at an eye-popping 25.1% rate.

Pretty much anything that's run by computers, which today is almost everything. So that's why they call it a fire sale, because everything must go.”

So Justin Long talking about computers must have thrown some of you back a minute where that’s seemingly all he was doing twenty years ago. But 25.1% is ridiculous. Something Justin can boast about for some time, and all you “Macs” who got it. We’re not implying that Justin Long got the job as a techie computer nerd in Live Free or Die Hard by being in a bunch of Mac commercials, but we’re saying it didn’t hurt.

Worse showing of the week? Paul Thomas Anderson’s MAGNOLIA, which not even could creep above the equator. Only 48.6% of players successfully identified the sprawling, meandering Los Angeles family drama. We were reluctant to use Tom Cruise’s most famous line from this movie, despite the installation of our NSFW banner. You know the line we’re talking about, and if you don’t, well, maybe you keep on living in ignorant bliss on that one. But we definitely thought more people would have got Magnolia, and in hindsight, we ought to have made it a Sunday Stumper. See Magnolia if you can though. Oh, and speaking of movies we recommend…

CQ Recommends

Well, what do you say? Shall we let the poor devils see the recommendations?

THE RIDER (2017)

Once a rising star of the rodeo circuit, and a gifted horse trainer, young cowboy Brady is warned that his riding days are over after an injury. In an attempt to regain control of his own fate, Brady undertakes a search for a new identity.

Stream on Max

“The Rider was one of our favorite films of the extra strong 2017 movie year. It also made us fans of director Chloé Zhao, who got the idea for The Rider while making a previous film, Songs my Brother Taught Me. Using primarily non-actors, the story is a heavy one but worth the time.”

-Sean

In the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.

See in theaters this week or rent it everywhere.

“Let’s keep the Bruce Willis theme going! Always fun to revisit this one.”
