Hell Week

David Lynch behind the scenes on Mulholland Drive (2001)

Yes, it was a rough week. After starting the week with (an) American Psycho, we went 6 STRAIGHT DAYS of doing David Lynch movies. Did we tell anyone we were gonna do this? No.

Did some people figure out what we were doing and thus put themselves in the driver’s seat in getting the movie right? Well, not too many of you as this week proved to be just as vexing as his films. Are we gonna do this type of thing when another preeminent director shuffles off their mortal coil? That’s kind of up to you. Hit us up on our socials (linked at the button of this here newsletter) or fire off an email ([email protected]) and let us know if a) you like theme-weeks, b) you don’t like theme weeks, or c) you are fine with theme weeks as long as it’s not something like a David Lynch week that’s gonna screw up your stats the way this did. Whatever your choice, we’ll guarantee that this subsequent week will feel more true to classic CineQuote and our standard variance of genre. Okay. Let’s get a cup of coffee and pour over the numbers…

Last Week’s Highlights

Sure enough, even though 6 of the 7 were Lynch movies, it was Mary Harron’s AMERICAN PSYCHO that narrowly edged out Lynch’s THE ELEPHANT MAN for win rate with a 81.5%.

This movie suffered a lot of flack even prior to its release, and some say Mary Harron’s career never really took off the way it should have. This marks the second time Patrick Bateman and his clear pores popped up on CQ, and given the abundance of succulent quotes, it won’t be the last. Also if you have a minute, here’s a dark parody of American Psycho from a Dutch jeans company lampooning (and impaling) hipsters.

Highest Win Percentage

81.5%

Lowest Win Percentage

45.7%

MULHOLLAND DRIVE came creeping around the corner with the lowly 45.7% win rate. It’s always tricky to give clues to a movie where you can’t exactly name drop the title, and there’s no majorly recognizable character names. Maybe we missed a really obvious quote that would have put all the pieces together, but we had to do what the cowboy told us to do and he was very clear about what quotes we were to use. The rest of the movies on CQ, well, that’s up to us, but for Mulholland Drive, that wasn’t our call. We definitely didn't want to see him twice...

Most Aced Movie

32.1%

As far as Ace Rate goes, some of you cracked the code and realized all the Lynchiness going on because THE STRAIGHT STORY netted top spot at 21.4%. Overall, that movie didn’t crest 50% total win rate, so players either knew it right away, or were in trouble the rest of the way despite the last quote being about an old guy riding a lawnmower and there aren’t TOO many movies where that’s a plot point.

I haven't had a drink in a lot of years, but now I'm going to have me a cold beer.

What flavor?”

CQ Recommends

We recommend not taking the ring.

Wanda is a wanderer in a dreary Rust Belt town, drifting from bars to motels, jobs to jobs and men to men. She's directionless and futureless, an aging beauty seen by men as usable and disposable. She hands over custody of her children because she knows they're better with their father. She eventually tags along with Norman Dennis, a petty criminal on the run.

Available to stream now on MAX

WANDA showed up on the Sight and Sound top 100 a couple years back, and it’s a movie that thankfully more people are learning about. Much like the woman behind it (Barbara Loden) it’s tragically sad. The kind of quiet movie that lingers with you long after the credits.
