CQ Newsletter #15 - SO LONG 2024! Don't let the door hit ya.
Hi everyone. As the year wraps up, and we won't be talking to you til 2025, just thought now would be a good chance to say thanks for being here. With a little luck, and y'all adopting the method of tell-two-friends-who-tell-two-friends-and-so-on-and-so-on-and-so-on… this little game started by two dorks might just turn into something. So whether this is your first newsletter after playing one game, or you've been with us since the dark ages of 2022, thanks friend-o. You complete us.
Let's pour over the numbers…
Last Week’s Highlights
We didn't do Home Alone again. We thought it might be funny to showcase it three weeks in a row, and then reconsidered, probably for the better. We're gonna go at least another week before we bring it back, in order to keep it sacred.
Highest Win Percentage 95.4% | Lowest Win Percentage 19.3% |
Holiday movies, for the most part, had dominating scores for the month of December. ELF was among the highest. 95.4% bested the Will Ferrell-as-manchild-run amok movie despite not hearing his voice until the final quote.
ACE IN THE HOLE sapped all that holiday cheer though as for the second week in a row the Sunday Stumper acted as heartbreaker.
Only 19.3% of players secured the right answer to the 1951 “let's milk a guy’s bad luck for some extra money" Kirk Douglas anti-newsman drama. Sidenote, only 1.3% of players got it on the first quote, and that's not even taking into account all of you who "cheated” by hearing a family member or roommate yell out, "what in the hell is Ace in the Hole?!” That's fair game as far as we would say, hence the quotes on cheated.
I'm sure more of you would have got it had Douglas been sweatier in this movie. Stanley Kubrick would crack that code nine years later…
Most Aced Movie 43.3% | ELF also won top Ace rate with 43.3%. That's insane. We underestimated all of you, and apparently how Elf is seen as scripture in your home. That Ace rate is so high it almost makes us want to do Elf again tomorrow with just absolute widow-makers for quotes. Let's see if you get it when one of the policemen says " Hey, look!” Actually, who we kiddin’, you probably would. A little something we're gonna have to remember next holiday season: make it tougher on you. “We open on a young tomato. He's had some tough times down on the farm with, you know, rabbits…” Shout out to Andy Richter, who we believe, made his first entry into CineQuote history with that quote. |
CQ Recommends

This is December now.
An aging playboy who has run out of money, finds a shy heiress and attempts to take over her finances…and kill her in the process. “Walter Matthau, twenty some years before Grumpy Old Men, teams up with the criminally unknown/underappreciated Elaine May (who also directed this) in one of the better dark comedies of the 70s. As we turn the calendar on the year, seems fitting to start with A New Leaf. It's terrific.” - Sean |
