CineQuote Newsletter #12

December 9, 2024

Hello CQ Nation, hopefully you’re seeing some good movies out in theaters right now. As we near the slate of (sometimes valid) award shows, studios are pushing what they think are their best offerings out in a desperate attempt to garner some gold. We’ve been pretty gluttonous when it comes to seeing new movies, and we may even put out our top ten list for 2024, even though we typically stay unbiased when it comes to the movie of the day on CQ. For now though, let’s pour over how everybody did.

Last Week’s Highlights

Highest Win Percentage

90.2%

Lowest Win Percentage

42.3%

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS grinned its way into the top spot this week with a sneecher zax of a score. 90.2% of you wuzzle bonks knew we were talking Grinch, even if it was a bit blithery zamp to do a MADE FOR TV MOVIE (gasp!) Normally we wouldn’t deem it eligible BUT a) it’s been co-opted by the film community at large and b) given how many streaming sites release their own original movies we kind of HAVE to accept TV movies on CQ within reason. That said, it didn’t seem to stymie too many of you this week, as only gluppity-glupps and diffendoofers dropped the blazz.

Ok, so apparently nobody ever has seen the movie I.Q. We thought because it featured rom-com darling Meg Ryan (at the peak of her powers) and Tim Robbins (hot off a theatrical run of Shawshank Redemption), that it was gonna be an easy get. Wrong! We were very, very wrong. In fact, going by the numbers, we may have been the only people to actually see this thing. We’re assuming not even Meg saw it. Only 42.3% of players eeked out a win here, which means this thing should have been reserved for a Sunday Stumper, if that. We hope if you ever have a need to see Walter Matthau as Albert Einstein taking jumps on the back of a motorcycle, you’ll remember little old I.Q.

Most Aced Movie%

21.7%

Highest ACE rate went to TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD where 21.7% of players recognized Jem’s voice describing Boo Radley:

He eats raw squirrels and all the cats he can catch. There's a long, jagged scar that runs all the way across his face.”

While 21.7% is unseasonably high, the English teacher that lives in our heart, drinking tea and grading papers is beaming with pride. For all you who got it, don’t let Mrs. Debose call you an ugly girl no more. Not after an Ace like that.

CQ Recommends

Dementor sold separately.

An unhappy apartment manager maintains a peculiar relationship with the diverse inhabitants of his building in Barcelona.

This gave me the creeps, in a good one. But also in a bad way. In a terribly haunting, menacing, and permeating way. Actually, maybe we shouldn’t recommend this… Alas TOO LATE! THE RECOMMENDATION HAS BEEN CAST.
