Just when y’all almost damned yourself to repeating a grade after a blistering week of C minuses and D pluses you come ROARING back with basically 4 A’s on your report card! A terrific week for CineQuote gamers, which of course means the Universe is gonna rain down seven days of Agnes Varda. You better be very well acquainted with the works of the pioneering Belgian-born French filmmaker known as a foundational figure of the French New Wave and a master of blending fiction with documentary realism, otherwise… well, it’s gonna be a tough week. Or hell, maybe we’ll just do seven days of Ice Age spinoffs. Either way, good luck.
You know, if everybody who got this newsletter leveled up and became a CQ Member we could give our staff a first-ever trip to Great Wolf Lodge as a much needed break.

Two Tom Hanks movies this week but CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was far and away the top dog. Funny that he’s trying to catch a fake pilot in this and fourteen years later he’s playing probably the most well known pilot in modern commercial airfare history. Of all the great John Williams soundtracks, this one feels the least “Williamsy” but evocative in a great jazzy way. The guy who this movie is based on is alive and well at 78 years old. Not quite a Dicaprio level of cuteness, but hey, don’t you think looking like Leo would have attracted too MUCH attention?
We had a feeling THE LORAX was gonna be tougher than your average Saturday fare so we bumped it back into the Sunday Stumper slot and well, the stats seem to reflect the change was appropriate. Budget for this was 70 million, but it made five times that back at the worldwide box office. Devito’s second biggest domestic box office, behind the 2019 Jumanji (not adj. for inflation).

Beyond the "stole/took" change in Genysis it appears they added a "just" to the quote. This threw some CQ players for a loop, but rest assured, our team of monkeys sitting at typewriters did in fact use the proper T1 quote. Weird that in 2015 you couldn’t steal a man’s pants, you had to take them. For more “Thoughts that keep us up at night” read the newsletter evey week...

If you haven’t seen Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” Season 2 on HBO, you probably don’t know why we’d urge you to do so after featuring Sully this week. If you have seen that season, and thought of it last week after getting Sully, then please, enjoy your present.

CQ Recommends
 Control aka Kontroll (2003) | A tale about a strange young man, Bulcsú, the fellow inspectors on his team, a rival ticket inspection team, crazy commuters, and a tale about love. Nimród Antal directed a couple episodes of Stranger Things, and half a dozen movies I’ve never heard of, but way back in 2003 he unveiled Control, an intense, stylistic thriller set in the Budapest subway system. This has “midnight movie” vibes written all over it, and I wonder if the themes, camerawork, and writing will still land the same punch as it did two decades ago, but rather than rewatch it and THEN recommend it, I’m gonna recommend it first and then go back and rewatch it this week. Hope I don’t look silly next time we talk. -Sean |
