The Last Ride of Chris Knight

Did we do an all-Val Kilmer week? Yes. Did we tell anybody we were gonna do that? No. Are we gonna do that every time we lose a big name actor to the great beyond? No, but it’s a small way we can honor the fallen here at CineQuote, in lieu of massive donations to their preferred charity. One day, perhaps, that’ll be our go-to response. If you recall, the last time we did something like that was when David Lynch checked out. Like those David Lynch movies, we’ll move these Val movies over to the Game Packs section, so feel free to revisit those or send to a friend. No slight to other recent departures from the cinema world (Gene Hackman, Nicky Katt, etc,) but it’s gonna feel very much business as usual for the immediate future.
Got some fun games ahead for ya this week. And be sure to check our CQ Recommendations if you need a laugh. With the weight of the world, ya can’t pass a little distraction here or there. So go see a local production of The Music Man, or read Katherine May’s Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times, or hell, brew a cup of tea, bake a pie, and watch a movie or two. Might be an ephemeral but necessary salve to help allay the incessant battering of the present moment.
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage86.1% | Lowest Win Percentage61.5% |
Despite being the first of seven Kilmer movies in a row before the theme had been established, it was his turn as Jim Morrison in THE DOORS that proved the most gettable for people, narrowly edging out TOMBSTONE by a percentage point. And while leather pants and serpentine gyrations fail to really come through in audio clips, his vocal approximation to Mr. Mojo Risin’ himself sure did and CQ players zeroed in eventually on the biopic. Val did all the vocals in this movie himself, and something we don’t think people talk about enough is how credible he was as a singer. Hope he gets to try some duets with Jim now.
As far as Val movies that gave people fits, AT FIRST SIGHT had a pretty low batting average, but not nearly as bad as NEVER CRY WOLF which only netted a 61.5% win rate. Just too many “Wolf/Wolves”-titled movies to even get this on an educated guess. As far as movies where a grown man strips buck naked and runs around a group of frenzied caribou in order to feel totally liberated or, uh, wolflike, this one ranks among our top 10.
Ace of the Week31.1% |
“Well?” “They're still working on him. He won't break. They've tried everything. Do you want me to bring out the Leroy Nieman paintings?” “No. We cannot risk violating the Geneva Convention. We'll break him tomorrow.” |
By Thursday, the Val was out of the bag and his movies were very much at the forefront of players’ guesses. Thus, by dropping a war-movie parody joke in the first quote it didn’t take too many of ya to zero your sights in on TOP SECRET! which blitzkrieged the other days’ movies with a 31.1% Ace rate. The Zucker Brothers would be proud of you. Despite not being as long-lasting as the other Zucker/Abrahams comedies, TOP SECRET! was indirectly the reason Val met his wife, so a silver lining there.
CQ Recommends

We recommend having a coffee with a friend.
We’d be remiss not to squeeze in a Val movie here, and while it didn’t cross your path in the last week, MACGRUBER still remains one of the best comedies of the last fifteen years and Kilmer’s portrayal of the Bondesque villain is sublime. While many equate the name to the recurring SNL sketch, the MacGruber feature film is so much funnier/richer/well-written. Don’t let your association with the sketch dissuade your chance at a good time. Here’s a taste. We don’t have a plan to do MacGruber soon on CQ, but we’re not good with plans. And not good with clues. What we are good at is kicking ass and ripping throats… |
