CineQuote Newsletter #32
Just add Ice...

Look, CineQuote has a long history of apologizing where and when it’s warranted. That said, as far as starting last week with the seminal Vanilla Ice rom-com (?) COOL AS ICE, we held an emergency board meeting and in a rare unanimous vote all agreed… no. apology. needed. Y’all better drop those other movie trivia sites you visit, and get with the only one out there with the courage (yes, courage) to feature a movie with a 3% on Rotten Tomatoes (and 3% is probably rounding up.)
Daniel Day-Lewis is one of our favorite actors, quite accomplished as a master of his craft, and we say this with the utmost respect for the man, but if he tried doing what Vanilla Ice does here, he’d most likely dislocate a knee.
Could we have waited for the Sunday Stumper to drop Cool As Ice? Sure, maybe? What fun is that, though? If you read last week’s newsletter, we DID tell you to “Stop, Collaborate, and Listen” (seriously we did, go back and read it) and when you see those three verbs it should only trigger one thing: Vanilla Ice. He doesn’t have many movies to guess from. Little hints might be sprinkled in further newsletters, so keep reading them, and having said that, welcome to Jurassic Park! Let’s look at the numbers…
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage80.4% | Lowest Win Percentage33.5% |
Two war movies, two very different outcomes this week. Players found their way through the jungles of Vietnam (and other Vietnam War-centric movies) to clock an 80.4% Win Rate on APOCALYPSE NOW. Maybe the unique voices of Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Marlon Brando, and finally, Martin Sheen got you there, and if not, then maybe you just know your Joseph Conrad adaptations. Different war, different part of the globe, and different result with PATHS OF GLORY. One of Stanley Kubrick’s early films, and as evidenced by the 33.5% Win Rate, not one of his most seen. While Lawrence of Arabia, 1917, Gallipoli, and All Quiet on the Western Front get the lion’s share of WWI movie attention, Paths of Glory should be right up there with its brethren, and none of those others have something as magnificent as Kirk Douglas’ chin cleft. Makes us wanna press our finger in there. Boop!
![]() Renée Zellweger and Robin Tunney in Empire Records (1995) | Ace of the Week15.1% “You know, Debra, don't be bitter. Certainly with your ever-growing collection of flesh-mutilating silver appendages and your brand new neo-Nazi boot camp makeover, the boys will come a-running.” |
EMPIRE RECORDS is a lot of things, and some of those feel fairly dated in 2025, namely the endangered species that is physical media, but Gen X-ers, “cuspers,” and elder Millennials who ingested this movie way back when seem to have it indelibly carved into their memory centers, so no matter what we started with, the Ace rate would probably have been close to 15%. One of these two women pictured above has an Academy Award, actually two, and we’re hoping the other one finds her way to the podium one of these days. #justicefordebra
CQ Recommends
A tale about a strange young man, Bulcsú, and the fellow ticket inspectors on his team who work aboard the subterranean Budapest Metro. A tale about racing along the tracks, and about a mysterious serial killer. And a tale about love. “Saw this at a film festival and it always lingered in a little, dingy, fluorescently-lit Hungarian corner of my mind. Not many movies quite like this, and far fewer do it well.” -Sean |
Documentary that chronicles how Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979) was plagued by extraordinary script, shooting, budget, and casting problems - nearly destroying the life and career of the celebrated director. “A fascinating and honest documentary with lots of movie-making details and great interviews revealing the quagmire of issues that came with making the hit film.” -Flet |
