CineQuote Newsletter #33

Breaking the first two rules of Breakfast Club

In one of the closest battles in CQ history, John Hughes bested Tyler Durden by the smallest of margins. It wouldn’t have taken many more players to hear Brad Pitt ask Edward Norton to hit him as hard as he can to lift Fight Club to top of the charts, but in the end, TBC fist-pumped its way to victory.

Also, those who played yesterday’s game realized we didn’t do a Star Wars movie for MAY THE FOURTH, despite expectations. No, instead, we dropped one of those on Friday. Gotta keep you on your toes to earn your respect. That may be why we did a Christmas movie at the end of April as well. For those of you still needed a Star Wars hit of dopamine (something a Death Stick can’t provide)… be sure and play today’s One Shot.

Last Week’s Highlights

Highest Win Percentage

92.9%

The Breakfast Club (1985)

Lowest Win Percentage

33.0%

Rad (1986)

92.9% is freaking Disney levels in terms of Win Rate, and THE BREAKFAST CLUB ain’t no Disney. It is quite a ubiquitous film for those who weathered childhood or young adulthood in the 80s and 90s, so perhaps it’s scripture as far as movie quotes go. TBC made its second appearance on CQ and surely didn’t cause players to cry and trauma-dump on your peers. Maybe you knew it because you’re such a Brain. Or maybe you’re more of an Athlete. And whether or not you’re a Basket Case or a Princess, you Criminals got your grade up to a high A-. No detention needed for any of you. Well done. Hey, speaking of Brains, you can have the Brain himself wish your niece Happy Graduation on AMH’s cameo.

Despite being from the meat of the 80s, apparently nobody remembers RAD. Of the movies featuring starry-eyed teenagers performing “BMX bike-dancing” at a high school to the song “Send Me an Angel” by Real Life (Melbourne’s own!), Rad is definitely in our top ten. Should you watch this movie just to see how phony it looks when they put a James Brown wig on some stuntman to approximate actor Lori Loughlin for the flashy BMX moves? Probably not, but you should definitely watch the scene here, and then wonder where it’s been all your life. We here at CineQuote are determined to fill in these soul-sustaining gaps that have kept you sleepless at night. And if you want a special boost of confidence from Cru Jones himself, you can book Bill Allen on Cameo to teach your kid how to bunny hop and tail grind here.

John Kapelos as Carl the janitor, the omniscient eyes and ears of the school.

Ace of the Week

26.4%

“I listen to your conversations. You don't know that, but I do. I am the eyes and ears of this institution, my friends.”

Man, you guys are tough to stump on these 80s classics. Doesn’t help that we only have seven or so speaking roles in this movie, but y’all zeroed in on Carl enough to win The Breakfast Club the Ace Rate of the week. John Kapelos would show up in some other John Hughes movies, and in case you still need a unique Mother’s Day gift, here’s his Cameo.

CQ Recommends

We recommend checking out this shot of stunt double Jose “D.cat!” Yanez, inventor of the backflip on a bicycle, during the filming of Rad (1986)

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

Robert Ford, who has idolized Jesse James since childhood, tries hard to join the resurgent gang of the Missouri outlaw, but gradually becomes resentful of the bandit leader.

One of the best shot films of the ‘aughts, you should see this just for the cinematography of the great Roger Deakins. Toss in some hair-dyed Brad Pitt, the younger Affleck, tight writing, and there’s a helluva movie here. OH! It also features talented character actress Sarah Lind in a small but vital role. Get her to wish your uncle a Happy Retirement or something on her Cameo page.

Oddly enough, we are in no way partnered with Cameo, just got started hyperlinking and couldn’t stop. We are without paid-sponsorship, but if you DO want to help us, become a Member of CQ. For 5 bucks a month, you get access to the last seven days of movies (no more missing days! do the whole week in one sitting!) you also get info on where the movie of the day is streamable or rentable, and a cozy spot in our (and our hosting providers) hearts.
