CineQuote Newsletter #35

A couple of Jokers

Holy mid-Spring, Batman, we’re already more than halfway through May, and while we haven’t been gorging on new movies over here at CQ, we’ve also been a bit apathetic on the current spate of offerings down at our local Gogoplex 15. Maybe if more movies did chummy promotional shots like the above Batman pic, it would prompt us to be more invested. Frankly, if they don’t give us a shoulder to shoulder promo pic of a snarling velociraptor and an annoyed-looking Scar Jo in advance of the latest Jurassic Park installment, consider CineQuote officially NOT INTERESTED. We want all heroes and villains to look like they’re hyping up a new Fox sitcom from 1992 otherwise we just don’t see the point in seeing anything new. Alright, we’ve put our big want into the universe, that’s all we can do for the moment.

OH! We also got a special MEMBERS-ONLY Pack dropping this week featuring three movies NEVER BEFORE SEEN on CineQuote. Normally, packs are for everyone and anyone to play, but from time to time we like to show a little extra love to our special someones, the CQ members. Info on how to join the team at bottom of newsletter, but for now, let’s crack the numbers and see how this week went…

Last Week’s Highlights

Highest Win Percentage

95.2%

The Mask (1994)

Lowest Win Percentage

46.1%

Pump Up the Volume (1990)

1994 was a good year to be Jim Carrey (and his agent) and one of the gems in his Triple Crown was THE MASK which apparently everybody anywhere all at once seemed to know. 95.2% implies that were it not for the 7500 other Jim Carrey movies throwing people off, and the oft-mistaken Rocky Dennis biopic MASK (1985), it could have been an all time high score. Also, definitely double check which movie you’re queuing up for your son’s sleepover party because my mom definitely hit play on the wrong Mask movie. Thanks, Ma. No wonder my buddies weren’t allowed back at our house.

And on the other end of the spectrum, not a lot of players zeroed in on brooding, teenage Christian Slater more or less birthing the podcast medium in PUMP UP THE VOLUME. Originally this movie’s working title was Talk Hard, with those words of course coming up in a quote for that day, however no one ever turns to the camera and says, “Hey, maybe it’s time we… pump up the volume.” (sadly). So it proved difficult to get to even a 50% Win Rate despite many recognizing the cube-gleamer himself. A good watch though, P.U.T.V., if you have a free night, and speaking of podcasts, the Unkind Rewind did a fun episode recently spotlighting this exact movie, if you’re into the whole nostalgia deep dive/cross-examination thing.

Ace of the Week
24.6%

Kit Hollerbach as news anchor Becky Narita in Batman (1989)

“Music. Cue Becky.”
“Good evening. The fashion world was stunned today by the sudden deaths of models Candy Walker and Amanda Keeler.”

-Batman (1989)

You sure know your Batman (Batmen?) and flexed hard with a showy 24.6% Ace Rate. That makes us want to do BATMAN again and make it damn near impossible, but we will bide our time and unearth it when the time is right, but holy impressive recall CineQuote players, you’re a survivor. Now, can you please pass the salt?

CQ Recommends

We recommend talking a stroll in the city.

Sound of Metal (2020)

During a series of adrenaline-fueled gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben begins to experience hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career - and with it his life - is over.

On the off chance you haven’t gotten to Sound of Metal yet, it’s a standout performance from Riz Ahmed, an actor quickly accumulating standout performance, as well as Paul Raci, who I hadn’t heard of prior to watching this. One of the top films of 2019 (a very strong year in its own right) Sound of Metal lingered in my brain space for many days afterward.
