CineQuote Newsletter #38
Romance, unconventional heroes and a fish (?) out of water

WHO’S READY TO TALK TONY AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARDS!!!!!?
Whoops, wrong newsletter. Sorry. Uh, how bout them… movies? Gooooooooo movies! Dammit, we wasted all our energy on that big opening greeting. WAIT, unless MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a movie now….?! (*furiously checks notes*) Eh. No. Unfortunately. How bout let’s just say it MIGHT be a movie someday and this newsletter is the first you’re hearing about it? There. Now we’re back on terra firma for this being a movie-based newsletter and we won’t feel bad about just leaving it there and not wasting any more of your time talking Broadway’s biggest night.
….
Uh.
Hmmm.
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage93.9% | Lowest Win Percentage47.8% |
Despite a sequel siphoning some guesses, ACE VENTURE: PET DETECTIVE had an impressive showing this week with a 93.9 % win rate. Curious if it would have been as popular had it starred Rick Moranis, who turned the movie down back in the early ‘90s. Moranis saying “nah, I’m good,” allowed Carrey to jump into the striped pants, leather combat boots, and Hawaiian shirt and diverted his career into leading movies. AVPD ended up making 107 million on a budget of 15 million, so, you’re right, it would have been WAY bigger with Moranis. Or even Alan Rickman who producers considered at one point. And yes, that’s actually true. We’d run that prompt thru A.I. to see what it would look like but we have too much respect for the late Mr. Rickman to besmirch his legacy.
David Fincher movies tend to be consumed, absorbed, and quoted quite often. Not so the case with his latest. THE KILLER couldn’t crack a 50% win rate, despite us dropping many Michael Fassbender voiceover quotes, which is pretty much the bulk of the movie, save for a good restaurant scene in Beacon, New York with Tilda Swinton and a grueling fight scene in hot, sweaty Florida not with Tilda Swinton (more’s the pity.) The Killer got a limited theatrical release but spent most of its days on Netflix (it’s probably still there if you’re curious, but now that we’ve spoiled it by saying Tilda Swinton doesn’t get in a balls-to-the-wall fight, we doubt there’s much lingering interest.)
Ace (Ventura) of the Week
10.1%
"Are you another one of them ‘Hard Copy’ guys?"
We thought this might be too difficult, but alas, the Venturaheads out there proved their mettle. Just besting a 10% Ace rate, and aptly so considering the title of this one, we owe all of you who got it a clean pair of shorts.
CQ Recommends

We recommend throwing on some sweatpants before hitting the theater, ya freaks.
An executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when a kidnapper springs his plot into action. When we talk Kurosawa, his samurai movies tend to come to the top of mind for most, however it’s his slice of modern Japanese life that is just as captivating. This one is gonna get the good ol American remake soon, and by that, it usually means bad. BEFORE it’s ruined for you by the remake, sit down and watch two masters at work, director Akira Kurosawa and the lead actor Toshiro Mifune. -Sean |
