CineQuote Newsletter #43

Hey, real quick.

Hey, real quick. There was this movie that came out in 1983 called Terms of Endearment. It was a major commercial and critical hit, amassing 165 million at the box office, putting it 2nd only behind Return of the Jedi, while also netting eleven Academy Award Nominations, winning five of them : Best Picture, Best Director (James Brooks), Best Actress (MacLaine), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (Nicholson).

Yes, 1983 was forty plus years ago, and some of you are gonna pop your gum and sass us with a catty, “uh, I wasn't even BORN yet" but Terms of Endearment continues to persevere via pop culture references, critics’ lists, Oscar legacy power, and general film discussions. Beyond just a good story with great acting and one of our favorite directors (of both TV and movies), Terms is very funny. We're guessing, regarding CQ players, pretty much everyone has heard of Terms of Endearment, and many of you have seen it, but if not you could context-clue your way to the title. Why are we bringing all this up? Absolutely no reason.

Let’s look over last week’s numbers!

Last Week’s Highlights

Highest Win Percentage

93.4%

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Lowest Win Percentage

47.8%

Terms of Endearment (1983)

Oh, Edward, we’d hold you anytime. Even if it meant a few nicks and scrapes, hugging you would be worth it. And probably wouldn’t leave us reeking of leather pants and wolf urine like the actor who embodied you. The Vincent Price “creation” hedge clipped to an impressive 93.4% win rate. For everyone who helped get EDWARD SCISSORHANDS the top spot… you all deserve snow in Florida (sidebar: hey remember when that was a fantasy concept?!)

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT IS A POPULAR MOVIE, PEOPLE! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE!? 47.8 % WIN RATE? IT WON THE ACADEMY AWARD! HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD!? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok. We need to get some new medication and settle down a bit. Sorry for the outburst. We’ll try to make this one a bit easier next time it saunters through CQ. Example of first quote we intend to use

It's time we talk, talk about these endearing terms, or however you put it.”

Ace of the Week
24.4%

"All right, young sir, I meant no offense. It's my job to ask questions after nightfall.”

Martyn Sanderson as Harry Goatleaf, sizing up the hobbits at his gate.

Smeagol is proud of you, Hobbitses. No other way to put it, but the nearly quarter of CQ players out there getting TFOTR on the first quote are all….so….precious. Next time we go Tolkein we’re gonna go much, much harder. Like… Gurthang hard.

CQ Recommends

We recommend being nice until its time to not be nice.

Eighth Grade (2018)

Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school.

Some people love themselves Bo Burnham, and others don’t connect well with his particular sense of humor. Regardless, this movie is terrific. So much here lot to love about how Elise Fisher makes the viewer feel like the world is riding on social media views and likes, and the outcome of a pool party. Part coming of age, part takedown of teen mores, but truly carried the entire way by the underappreciated Fisher. “GUCCI!”
