Gilmore v. Atreides v. Corleone

Three movies in the 90 percentile this week and two in the 40 percentile. Like we constantly say around here… the work of Sandler, Chalamet, and Marlon Brando will always narrowly beat out the movies of Joyce Hyser and Shaquille O’Neal. That’s no knock on those two, it’s just how the numbers are trending. Perhaps if they both teamed up for their next film in which a journalist needs to adopt a male persona in order to climb the career ladder while her best friend vies for the draft consideration of the NBA (or perhaps WNBA?), maybe, just maybe, it’d have enough ooomph to hit that sweet CQ 90. Aspiring screenwriters out there, please don’t steal our really, really, really good idea. It’s gold!
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage90.5% | Lowest Win Percentage46.5% |
Two sports movies, two very different outcomes. Starting with the good, HAPPY GILMORE crushed a drive, getting nearly 91% win rate, closely eclipsing Dune and The Godfather. We’re guessing the 9
% who didn’t succeed had hurt fingers and flubbed their last submission. Well guess what? Now their backs are gonna hurt because they just pulled landscaping duty. Yep. New rule.
Sometimes (not all the time) but sometimes we bury the title of the film within the quote itself. When it happens while watching said movie we pull the Rick Dalton. We’re sure it can be frustrating as there’s never no rhyme nor reason as to when we try to help you out this way, but we did try to help by dropping the phrase “BLUE CHIP” into quote 5. Didn’t matter too much with Nick Nolte as the sweaty-faced and emotional volatile ______ (in this case, basketball coach) from the ‘90s. William Friedkin directed some stellar movies in his day (The Exorcist, Sorcerer, The French Connection, etc.) This, with all due respect, wasn’t one that they brought up much at his memorial.
![]() Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) making a call to Donald (the late/great Joe Flaherty.) Spoiler: he’s not hungry. | Ace of the Week24.4%"Hey, it's great to hear from you! You want to go to the Sizzler and catch some grub?!” |
Not sure we could have stumped those of you who got this on the first quote. The people who know Happy Gilmore well know Happy Gilmore insanely well. Next time this steps out onto the green we’re gonna go as difficult as can be for the first couple quotes.
Thirty years from now will the recently released sequel have this type of zealous recall in terms of dialogue?
No.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week.

CQ Recommends

Starting your morning right with some CQ recommendations
Residents of a worn-down Iranian city encounter a skateboarding vampire who preys on men who disrespect women. The less I say the better for this one, but when I saw it back in 2014 it kind of felt like a little slice of cinema wonder. Eager to give it a rewatch soon, but Ana Lily Amirpour’s feature debut is everything you want from a young director (+ actor) bursting out of the gate. -Sean |
