CineQuote Newsletter #59

A chill in the air makes for good movie-watching at home.

The face Jada probably should have had at the Oscars…

We put a stake in spooky season, and while this next month is not all movies about football, marathons, and Thanksgiving, we’re not gonna rule those out. However you will see a significant drop in the amount of horror cinema that recently popped up on CQ, so you can go back to playing with the lights off and cease checking under the bed. At least for awhile…

In other news, we are tinkering away on the CQ App, and we have a select group of Beta testers who are kicking the tires and checking under the hood. Hopefully, we’ll get this thing nice and polished for ya soon, but in the meantime kindly try and get a new friend to visit CineQuote.net this week so they can say they played it before it was an app.

Ok, let’s crack open the numbers and savor the delicious nougat…

Let the Right One In (2008)

CASPER was expectedly friendly to players this week, floating up to almost a 94% win rate. The remaining 6% are partial to more evil spirits, perhaps. Teen Magazine cover boy Devon Sawa was the voice of Casper, for those who don’t know. And this was a year after Jonathon Taylor Thomas was the voice of Simba. Obviously the key to success back then was to be rocking that Shawn Hunter hairstyle, the teen boy equivalent of “the Rachel Green.”

Significantly less Tiger Beat energy was the 2008 Swedish horror darling LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, which ended up in the very strange position of having the lowest win rate of the week AND the highest Ace rate of the week (more on that in a minute.) If nothing else, this movie reminds us to always avoid horseplay around swimming pools. Director Tomas Alfredson cashed in the goodwill from this movie’s success to get handed the reins for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and then cashed in that goodwill to get handed the reins for The Snowman. Thus ended the goodwill.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing. What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

“Do you live here?”

“Yeah, I live here, right in the jungle gym.”

In one of the more abnormal returns we’ve seen since we started, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN proved that some movies you either know it right away, or not at all. Nearly 33% of players ACED this Swedish vampire kids (?) movie, with subsequent quotes not really affecting things too much. They would go on to remake this for the U.S. in the not-quite-as-good Let Me In but discerning ears picked up the Swedish language somehow and put två and två together to land on the right one. And thus, let it in. "Bra gjort!"

Here are the numbers for all the games last week.

All That Breathes (2022)

Against the darkening backdrop of New Delhi’s apocalyptic air and escalating violence, two brothers devote their lives to protecting one casualty of the turbulent times: the bird known as the black kite.

Great camerawork, especially the low light situations, the bird closeups and silhouette shots. If Pakistan were to make a tourism video for India, they wouldn't make it look quite this bleak. At times severe in how dire it seems, there’s still an optimism that can’t be broken. This received an Oscar nomination for Best Doc. so it certainly may already be on your radar, but here’s just another push towards checking it out.
