Rise of the Big Streams

It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop…EVER…until you are subscribed.
At press time, we don’t know for sure if the Netflix deal to buy Warner Bros. and HBO is a done deal (or if you believe the rumors, they’ll own Wyoming soon), however it’s looking like it might be close to completion. We’ll save our thoughts on that for down the road (spoiler: anything that might cause movie theaters to close down is gonna be a big NO from us)… but we do want to take this opportunity to announce that CineQuote just turned down a major deal that would have resulted in our sale to Catster. Granted, it was a very difficult decision to pull out with the ink almost dry, and it may well be the best course of action in the future, but at the last minute our board vetoed the deal. So, for the time, we will continue making games free of a heavy cat agenda. Press inquiries will be neglected until we shamefully rehire all the dog-owning staff we let go in anticipation of the deal.

It’s the final week to play the expansive 🎬Comic Con! Pack featuring all movies based on comic book characters. Packs do not count toward your overall stats so feel free to give this one a crack knowing that even if you guess Batman for every one of them, your CQ scores will remain the same. Also, guessing Batman on every game ensures you’ll get at least one of them right…

We know this last one was a tough week. Only one A-Grade for players as everyone battled cryptic clues and box office duds. Don’t sweat it if the week felt like a pop quiz in calculus in the middle of Social Studies class. Let’s take a peek at the numbers…
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage94.2 % | Lowest Win Percentage41.1 % |
Congratulations to FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF, for not only locking down the top win rate of the week but also being the first time a movie has appeared three times on CineQuote. And because we don’t reuse quotes here that’s 15 distinct quotes from that movie (not including any Win Quotes.) We can’t imagine it doesn’t make pop on CQ a fourth time. John Hughes created an absolute treasure trove of goodies. Hell, we could probably do a whole week of Ferris Bueller as the movie and not run out, but then we’d be sick of it and need years to recover. Unless someone sends over the nursing team that can restore our pluck?
When players heard Bernie’s name mentioned in quote 5, it was more or less a coin flip between the original or the sequel, WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S II, and judging by the low win rate, it seems most people went with the first one. Alas, they didn’t miss much. WAB2 was more or less a desperate cash-grab four years after the surprise success of Larry and Richard’s first offense in corpse desecration. If you’re into seeing a dead body get hit in the genitals, then you got about 3 hours of movie waiting for you.
Ace of the Week15.6%“Between grief and nothing. I'll take grief.” |
Before we give Dean of Students Ed Rooney too much credit for such a profound statement, know that he’s quoting William Faulkner’s novel The Wild Palms. There’s no way Ed Rooney could have come up with that on his own. Even “pucker up, buttercup” is a 1966 song by Junior Walker. The brevity of the quote could not befuddle 15.6% of players who landed an ace. To wit, we here at CineQuote doubt we can even stump that same 15.6% on ANY quote from this movie. Guess we’ll see how obscure we can get next time Ferris skips school.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week:
CineQuote Movie | Win % | Ace % |
|---|---|---|
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) | 94.2% | 15.6% |
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) | 88.8% | 4.7% |
Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) | 74.1% | 1.8% |
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) | 73.5% | 6.4% |
Ladybugs (1992) | 59.2% | 2.3% |
The Conversation (1974) | 45.7% | 1.4% |
Weekend at Bernie's II (1993) | 41.1% | 1.0% |
CQ Recommends

CineQuote recommends practicing when no one is listening.
France, 1770. A painter is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of a young woman who has just left the convent and is set to be betrothed. Céline Sciamma has not disappointed across the four films of hers that I’ve seen, and although 2021’s Petite Maman was terrific, it’s 2019’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire that continues to linger with me. One of the last films I saw before Covid shut down theaters, the story of Marianne and Héloïse left me in a contemplative delirium that had very little to do with my spiking fever, ivermectin paninis, and lung-rattling cough, and everything to do with how well-crafted and beautiful this movie is. -Sean |
