CineQuote Newsletter #65
Birthday week.

It’s CineQuote’s birthday this week. Our wish already came true…
Oh boy, Jack Frost blew through town and iced over a lot of the scores this week. Only two movies managed a B grade. Listeners of the Unkind Rewind Podcast had a leg up on the Sunday Stumper, but if you thought this week was uncharacteristically trying, well, you may be right. Before we get to all that…
Do you know the CineQuote App has a Daily Reminder feature? That’s right! If you click your Profile tab, you’ll be able to toggle on a notification (at the time of your choosing) that CQ is ready to go. Think of it like the Owl from Duolingo giving you a heads-up to practice your Finnish, but without all the smug attitude and sneering self-righteousness. CineQuote is ready to go at midnight (your time) but you can get the daily reminder whenever you want (or toggle it off if you don’t like it).
Last but certainly not least, IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY ON TUESDAY! The best gift we could ask for is your support of CineQuote! Please consider signing up as a Member if you like what we do. It’s only five bucks a month and you get some cool perks and access to bonus games. In case you’re wondering, we’re 3 now! That means a lot of catching balls (without trapping), walking down stairs with alternating gait, hopping/standing on one foot, brushing our own teeth, and calming ourselves down when we’re upset. And way more Cassavetes movies (we’re advanced for our age). Ok, on with the breakdown.
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage87.0% | Lowest Win Percentage46.5% ![]() Summer School (1987) |
87% of you kicked off your Sunday shoes. 87% of you pulled you off of your knees. Jack, get back, 87% of you figured out that the small town of Beaumont made dancing illegal, and knew (rightly) we were talking the O.G. FOOTLOOSE with the Kevin Baconator. If you’re one that appreciates a good Yacht Rock origin story, you know this movie was initially called The Boy Who Dances Away Oppression. If you were part of the unlucky 13%, we expect to see you at the old warehouse on the edge of town gymnastidancing away your frustration (along with your extremely obvious stunt/dance double).
Alright, we here at CQ sometimes get it wrong. Namely, last Friday when we put what turned out to be streak killing (week-killing?) screwball comedy from the 80s and did not designate it as a Stumper. Were we the only ones who saw this thing!? Apparently yes, as only 46.5% of players violated all common sense and let their surfing/teacher obsessed student crash at their pad for a few weeks til things cooled down. People, people, people! Look, just because it didn’t win the Academy Award in 1987 (screw you The Last Emperor!) doesn’t mean SUMMER SCHOOL is not worth getting retro on a free night and seeing how good Mark Harmon’s comedy chops were before he chased that sweet, sweet NCIS money. We did throw in a bunch of hints within those quotes, specifically mentioning that:
1) a teacher was planning on going to Hawaii, but couldn’t
2) that teacher was being forced to teach remedial English to underachieving kids
3) that teacher was being forced to work…during the summer
Even if you couldn’t think of a movie, perhaps just try typing in “teacher school summer… uh, …Hawaii?”. Who knows, maybe playing some word association games with that final guess might prove fruitful. But as far as 80s comedies that feature scenes at Chippendale Clubs, ONLY SUNDAY STUMPERS FROM HERE ON OUT! Just like the Lord intended.
Ace of the Week17.2 %“I shall be forced to go to Switzerland to attend a ghastly peace summit in Reichenbach. The worst thing about Switzerland is the altitude.” |
CQHQ thought you might have forgotten the plot elements within this dialogue of the second RDJ Sherlock movie. Not so! A whopping 17.2% of players thought this first quote a tad… elementary. However, SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS still proved a perplexing riddle to many players as it still only managed a 62% win rate. One of those weird weeks where a movie 6/10 players got but secured the top Ace rate. Ya just never know with CineQuote, and most reliably, this game will always be afoot.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week.
CineQuote Movie | Win % | Ace % |
|---|---|---|
Footloose (1984) | 87.0% | 4.8% |
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) | 85.0% | 12.1% |
Pete's Dragon (1977) | 79.7% | 1.8% |
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) | 71.7% | 2.7% |
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) | 62.9% | 17.2% |
Black Widow (1987) | 55.3% | 2.7% |
Summer School (1987) | 46.5% | 9.5% |
CQ Recommends

We recommend keeping Rizzo out of the kitchen.
Billy Casper, a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy who is either bullied or outright ignored, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. Child actors can really derail a good project if they aren’t believable in the role, but director Ken Roach found himself a diamond in the rough when he cast young David Bradley. This is an unflattering look at the late 60s work life in England, and for some, this may not be your cup o’ tea. For others, Kes will forever find place in your heart to roost. -Sean |

Cup of Earl Grey and CQ in the morning? Make it so.
