CineQuote Newsletter #72
Things are less funny now.

Icon. Paragon. Genius.
And now, Saint Catherine of Toronto.
A Titan has fallen. Hasn’t been a particularly great week, and now we go and lose a legend of comedy like Catherine O’Hara, among the finest to ever do it. Damn. It doesn’t seem fair. We never get enough time with the ones that mean the most. Say hi to Fred for us, Catherine. For you, we’ll try and find our smile.

Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage95.3% | Lowest Win Percentage38.0% |
“Here come the Men In Black (Men In Black) Galaxy defenders (oh, oh, oh, oh) Here come the Men In Black (Men In Black) They won't let you remember (won't let you remember)” Well apparently that memory wipe pen didn’t work on ANY of you as your brains remained unfazed and pulled MIB to the top spot this week.
Speaking of memories, nobody saw Bong Jong Ho’s MEMORIES OF MURDER as it erratically jumpkicked its way towards the lowest win rate of the week with a 38%. For all the bonafides Parasite earned, the movie he made 16 years prior still remains one of his best. Our friends over at the Movie Night Extravaganza Podcast recently and thoroughly discussed this movie, not like it can help you if you couldn’t win the day on CineQuote. However, it IS a movie that no doubt will turn up again down the road. Crazy thing about this movie… it centers on a cold case, and years AFTER the movie came out the case was solved!
CHICKEN RUN so Mel Gibson could walk (after his driver’s license was restricted for 90 days following his July 2006 arrest for driving under the influence in Malibu.
HAIRSPRAY had three different quotes about hair, big hairdos, and even a song with the lyrics "Hey girl, what you doin' over there?" "Can't you see? I'm sprayin' my hair." Assuming the 25% or so of players who missed it opted for the John Travolta in drag remake from 2007 but John Waters heads heard Divine’s voice in Quote 3 and were not tricked. Rest in peace, Queen.
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF needed players to give it a smidge more attention, After all, the game featured the quote, “You know what I feel like? I feel all the time like a cat on a hot tin roof" and yet players only barely cracked the 70% win rate. Do we need to install a CQ logo like Microsoft’s Clippy to ask “Are you suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure you don’t wanna read this last quote again and give a real guess?”
MAESTRO didn’t do that well this week (63.2%, ouch!), so players either couldn’t distinguish Bradley Cooper’s weird affectation, Mulligan’s weird affectation, or figure out what the hell a movie about a conductor might be called.

Ace of the Week12.5%[whistling] |
For those of you who got the Ace on this one, know that you are trusted by the great Shadowfax. Y’all must be some hardcore Tolkeindili or Ringers out there who can zero in on this movie with just a whistle. Granted, it’s not just any whistle….that’s the whistle of a wizard! Or rather, the whistle of a real-life knight as McKellen got knighted back in the day by Order of the British Empire, but McKellen played Gandalf across six movies, so knowing this whistle was from LOTR: TTT is impressive. We did get some stuffy feedback putting us on blast because “whistling is not a quote” but that’s JUST the type of gripe agents of Sauron might lob. It’s not the first we included a non-word based clue here at CQ and probably won’t be the last.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week:
CineQuote Movie | Win % | Ace % |
|---|---|---|
Men in Black (1997) | 95.3% | 5.8% |
Chicken Run (2000) | 85.4% | 10.0% |
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) | 78.6% | 12.5% |
Hairspray (1988) | 73.6% | 4.1% |
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) | 70.9% | 1.1% |
Maestro (2023) | 63.2% | 2.0% |
Memories of Murder (2003) | 38.0% | 10.1% |
CQ Recommends

We recommend traveling the countryside by oliphaunt if you ever find yourself in Gondor. But it still only counts as one.
Twin boys move to a new house with their mother after she has face-changing cosmetic surgery, but under the bandages is someone the boys don't recognize. They (it’s always “they” isn’t it)? remade this in 2022 with Naomi Watts as the lead, and although we all have nice things to say about Naomi Watts, don’t get that one mixed up with the original. The original is great. That’s the one you should see. That’s the one you want. That’s the one I’m recommending. -Sean Original poster design seen here by Aleks Phoenix.
