CineQuote Newsletter #74
VOTE DAVE 2028!

Every day’s a holiday on CineQuote, even when it’s (Best Fictitious) President’s Day.
An uneventful week over her at CineQuote HQ. Thanks for withholding the angry letters excoriating us for not doing Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day, Fantasia on World Hippo Day, The Bachelor on Freedom to Marry Day, or Single White Female on National Make a Friend Day. And if you’re reading this on President’s Day, sorry, but no, we did not do Dave. Or DID we!?!?!?!*
*We didn’t. :/
ALSO, if you’d be so kind as to drop us a nice rating and review on the App Store or Google Play, that would really be swell of you.
If we get, let’s say 10 good reviews from y’all before the next Newsletter, we’ll have a reward for one and all to play. Alright, let’s talk some stats…
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage91.6% | Lowest Win Percentage63.9% |
CHICAGO tommygun-two-stepped all over the competition, and normally 91.6% is a lot to brag about. It pales woefully to the 98.6% that Groundhog Day got last week though. Wowee zowee, that was a high rate. We can’t explain what was in the water that day, but defy Dave Matthews and keep drinking that sweet, sweet water. Chicago won the 75th Annual Academy Award and kicked off a torrid string of musical movie adaptations. Some in the biz even thought after Chicago that musicals would be the flavor of the awards season each and every year, but it took all the way to 2012 for one to get another Best Picture nomination (Les Misérables) and all the way to 2023 before another would win (Oppenheimer)*.
*kidding, although….
TANGO & CASH did terribly up until quote 4 where we mentioned a guy named Cash, and quote 5 where we mentioned both a guy named Cash and a guy named Tango. Because of those, the movie picked up 65% of its 89.4% of correct guesses. This means that you are learning the ancient secrets of the CQ dojo: on Sunday Stumpers pay close attention to the words we use in those final quotes. (Sidebar, we couldn’t help anybody with yesterday’s Stumper as they NEVER say the title in the film. It’s only shown in print at one point.) Along with Spielberg’s Always, Tango & Cash was the last movie to be released in to theaters in the 1980s. Hopefully that little bit of trivia wins you a bet some day.
We concluded our little homage to Catherine O’Hara with FRANKENWEENIE, an animated feature that was a remake of a non-animated short. While there’s seemingly a new Frankenstein movie every 18 minutes, only a few of them have names suggesting a pet/campfire food tie-in.
PANIC ROOM was originally cast with Nicole Kidman and Hayden Panettiere, but mitigating factors led them to graciously leave the production before filming commenced. That means there are two actors right there who haven’t yet sworn they’ll never work with David Fincher again! Also, very few people noticed and even fewer commented that we started this game with a quote about pizza on National Pizza Day (February 9th). Mark it on the calendar next year so you’ll be ready when we do either Mystic Pizza or Spaceballs.
We had to talk ourselves out of doing an entire BEST IN SHOW day of just Hamilton and Meg Swan quotes, but this was Catherine O’Hara’s dedication and thus, we’ll have to save this for next time.
We tried really hard for people to guess WYATT EARP without having to actually say his name in the quotes. Hints like “Doc Holliday, O.K. Corral and Dodge City” mostly led people to non Wyatt Earp answers. The low win rate suggests some people may have to crack open those history books of the American Frontier. Catherine O’Hara played Wyatt Earp’s sister in law thus making it “her” movie.
Ace of the Week10.7%“Doing my own stunts was non-negotiable. You know why?” “Authenticity.” “Correct.” |
Willem Dafoe has been in 102,772 movies, but enough people saw his turn in the latest BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE to secure it the Ace rate of the week. We would talk further about this and mention the movie again, but we don’t wanna risk saying you-know-what a third time. After all, we want to get our security deposit back one day.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week.
CineQuote Movie | Win % | Ace % |
|---|---|---|
Chicago (2002) | 91.6% | 1.9% |
Tango & Cash (1989) | 89.4% | 8.1% |
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) | 89.1% | 10.7% |
Frankenweenie (2012) | 84.6% | 4.7% |
Panic Room (2002) | 79.8% | 7.5% |
Best in Show (2000) | 79.2% | 9.4% |
Wyatt Earp (1994) | 63.9% | 3.4% |
CQ Recommends

We recommend giving them that ‘ol razzle dazzle.
A blind concert violinist gets a cornea transplant allowing her to see again. However, she gets more than she bargained for when she realizes her new eye can see ghosts. A little hokey at times, but lost in the great flood of Asian horror from Japan and South Korea during the late 90s/early 2000s was this spooky little thriller from Hong Kong. Is it still as scary as when I first saw it at that abandoned summer camp, watching it on a small TV/VCR combo that I found out later wasn’t even plugged in? Well, time to head back to old Camp Gutyalater to find out. -Sean |
