CineQuote Newsletter #78

Oscar: Wild

Well, let’s start off this with a word of warning. This newsletter is being written post-Oscars, and in between Eric Roberts’ house for canapes & caipirinhas, and then stopping over at Gary Busey’s afterparty where he makes everyone play “Ya Gotta Pin Me Before You Go Home”. All that to say we’re running on empty a bit as we unpack Hollywood’s biggest night AND CineQuote’s latest week. So please, keep the lights off, the voices low, hand us a glass of water and some aspirin, and grant a little tolerance this week with this slightly compromised newsletter.

Oscar Bullet points:

One Battle After Another bested Sinners, and won the night with six awards, although Sinners pulled some heavy hardware (Actor! Screenplay! Cinematography! Score!)
Tie for Best Live Action Short (we lost 20 grand on that one)
Conan got a standing ovation at the start of the show (rightly so, even if it hadn’t been such a tough year for him)
First Irish Best Actress Winner (and we got to hear some Gaelic during her speech!)

So much more to unpack, but as we said, gotta hit Busey’s before he’s straight-up bloodlustin’ cuz there just ain’t no pinning that.

Also, few weeks ago we unveiled the Triple Play for our Members to play. As promised, here’s another one:

This is a Member-Exclusive game. If you want to give it a shot, click that profile tab and help support this plucky little underdog of a mobile game by becoming a Member for $5 a month (less than a quarter a day.) Thank you, thank you, thank you! We would really love to see ya onboard.

Alrighty. Let’s talk numbers:

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

TAKEN did quite well even though there are two other Takens out there that could have mislead some people. We’d write more but Steven Seagull just showed up at this party and he wants to try out a new move on somebody so we gotta go.

FRIDAY THE !3TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN did really poorly despite name-dropping aquaphobic Jason early on, and then giving two hints about the location being New York. Oh well. Don’t feel bad. It was Friday the 13th IRL so we kinda had to do this. Good thing Jason didn’t take Paris or Liam Neeson would have looked for him, found him, and killed him (at least temporarily). Now THERE’S a million dollar movie idea!

Typically we write a little bit about all the movies we did this last week, but Wendy Crewson needs a ride to William Mapother’s house to get her crockpot and we said we were going that way, so take a gander at the number breakdown below if you’re curious about how they did.

Either you all are sex traffickers, or you are really aware of sex traffickers handsome-faced tactics. Hats off to any of you who Aced this. Your prize is that Liam Neeson is now looking for you, and he WILL find you…

CQ Recommends

We recommend planting those taters in mid-April.

Women Talking (2022)

The women of an isolated religious colony reveal a shocking secret about the colony's men.

Sarah Polley wrote and directed this, and if she continues to do that, I’d be quite excited as I tend to like what she’s putting out into the world. This has some staginess that feels at times too performative, but my, my,, does it showcase some talented women, among them recent Oscar winner Jessie Buckley.
