CineQuote Newsletter #83
If you have CQ, you have the power to destroy the darkness...

CineQuote will be found. Mola Ram won’t…
Hello dear readers. The IRS found us, I don’t know how, but they found us. Run for it, Marty! That said, we were behind the 8 ball a bit scrambling to get everything in on time with i’s crossed and t’s dotted (oh wait.. damn, audit incoming.) So in lieu of our usual Classic CQ patter to start your Monday, please accept two random bits of trivia from this week in movie history:
Field of Dreams held its world premiere in, of all places, Dubuque, Iowa back in 1989.
The Academy Awards held its 2021-Covid-safe?-supper club style ceremony where the recently deceased Chadwick Boseman definitely positively won the award for Best Actor for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. We’re so assured of this fact that there’s no point in looking it up to confirm. Nope, no reason at all. La di da. Ok, moving on…
Thanks to our new CQ Members you joined up this week! We promise to help you out of the room of spikes that’s slowly crushing you, even if it means we gotta go through a lot of creepy crawly bugs in order to do it. Last month we unveiled the Triple Play for our Members to test themselves! As promised here’s another one:
This is the Member-Exclusive mini game we provide each Newsletter, so if you wanna be one of the great heroes in history books, click that profile tab and help support this plucky little underdog of a mobile game by becoming a Member for $5 a month (less than a quarter a day.) Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Alrighty. Let’s talk numbers:
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage95.4% | Lowest Win Percentage37.2% |
Well, not surprisingly, Disney just waltzes into this game and waves his cryogenically frozen scepter around and dominates the week. ALADDIN got its wish and took home top spot ensuring Uncle Walt get another notch on the wall of his life pod. If we’re confusing you, we’re merely referencing the (sadly) debunked rumor that Disney was frozen and is awaiting the cure for what three packs of cigarettes a day did.
Speaking of famous filmmakers of the mid 20th-century, based on how poorly TO CATCH A THIEF did Alfred Hitchcock is bound to be turning over in his grave, except he wasn’t buried but cremated and had his ashes scattered over the Pacific Ocean. GOSH! Aren’t we learning a lot about end of life choices for famous men today! This movie featured two of the biggest movie stars in the world circa mid-1950s, but got absolutely slaughtered by everything else. C’mon people…. know your Hitchcock! CineQuote can’t all be just Ski Patrol and Superbad, we gotta do some classics from time to time. And no, we’re not gonna reserve these just for Sunday. If you’re reading this, it might be helpful, come mid-May, to have watched some more from the master of suspense…
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom would and should have gotten the top spot were it not for the Prince of Agrabah and its hard-coded-to-your-brain voices. And most of you got it cold on that second quote after hearing Spielberg’s better half.
Thankfully Coming to America did pretty well, restoring our faith in you that you know the essentials. OH, and if you don’t know, the legendary Nile Rodgers did the score for this movie. His Tiny Desk concert is outstanding, but his keyboardist surprising him is certainly a highlight…
Tommy Boy didn’t do too hot, probably on account of us reserving Chris Farley’s voice til the end. Our bad. We’ll bring the lovable loaf in earlier next time.
Fifty Shades Darker absolutely DESTROYED Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief. We hesitate to look into what this might mean about the future of cinema. Whatever it means, we’re sure Scorcese is gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiissed.
Fruitvale Station had Michael B. Jordan going for it in those quotes, so that helped narrow which mass transit-centered tragedy we were quoting from. So sad. :(
Ace of the Week
36.2%
“He's got a sword!”
“You idiot! We've all got swords!”
So basically, when we next do a Disney movie from the 90s, we’re gonna have to do like a two-word quote to start, otherwise you Lightning Lane passholders are just gonna know it right away. Case in point, ALADDIN. That’s an insane Ace rate. Well, we wasted a wish stumping you on this one. The voice you hear in this is Jim Cummings who has one of the longest resumes we’ve ever encountered. The guy has done voiceover in damn near every cartoon made during his lifetime. Check him out.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week.
Movie | Win % | Ace % |
|---|---|---|
Aladdin (1992) | 95.4% | 36.2% |
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) | 93.5% | 11.9% |
Coming to America (1988) | 91.8% | 16.2% |
Tommy Boy (1995) | 78.2% | 11.8% |
Fifty Shades Darker (2017) | 75.3% | 0.7% |
Fruitvale Station (2013) | 55.8% | 2.1% |
To Catch a Thief (1955) | 37.2% | 1.9% |
CQ Recommends

We recommend starting your day with breakfast at McDowell’s in Queens.
A mall security guard is called into actio n to stop a flasher from turning shopper's paradise into his personal peep show, but when he can't bring the culprit to justice, a surly police detective is recruited to close the case. This came out the same year as Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and unfortunately the two movies are either mistaken for one another, or combined into one non existent movie where Seth Rogen and Kevin James team up together. Only Observe and Report has director Jody Hill behind it, so if you like pretty much anything on HBO featuring Danny McBride from the last 15 years, you’ll probably like this. -Sean |
