Beat the heat. Find a cool movie theater.

By the light of CQ do all your wishes come true.
Yes, yes, so far most states in America have either melted or had their goverments overthrown as they’ve fallen to hooliganism. And nevertheless. the air-conditioned sanctity of a theater still persists. If you’re in a constant state of sweaty back, or are being pursued by Norweigans pretending to row an invisible sailing vessel towards you, just go to the movies!
Today is July 6th. Forrest Gump hit theaters on this day in 1994, and back in 1933 it was one of the first film premieres of a Three Stooges movie. Happy Birthday to Sylvester Stallone, Janet Leigh, Geoffrey Rush, Eva Green, Ned Beatty, Burt Ward, Merv Griffin, and the Dalai Lama (whose appearance in a documentary or two validates him for this list). Also, no big deal but it’s also the birthday of Sean, one of CineQuote’s creators. In lieu of expensive and ornate presents, please go see a movie at an independent movie theater near you. Maybe even help the biz by overpaying for something at the concession stand. Tell ‘em CineQuote sent ya.
Lastly, welcome aboard to all our new CQ Members! We’re so happy you signed up. Alrighty. Let’s talk numbers:
Last Week’s Highlights
Highest Win Percentage85.9% | Lowest Win Percentage53.5% |
CineQuote celebrated America’s birthday by doing the patriotic thing, a stopmotion musical fantasy movie about the merger of two holidays America goes even harder for, Halloween and Christmas. So we’ve done two Henry Selick-directed flicks in a week (the other was James & TGP), which means you Monkeybone and Coraline fans are gonna have a little bit of a wait. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS has a lot of Tim Burton’s footprints running through it, but we gotta remember that this is a Selick movie and we task you all with correcting folks who make the mistake of Burton-washing the accreditation.
There are 5 STEP UP movies. 5! Some of these are even in 3-D (we bet you can guess which installment). Yet it gets overwhelming to think about all the other movies that could apply to these quotes. After all, there’s your Save the Last Dances, there’s your High Strungs and Honeys, there’s your Street Dances and Center Stages, and hell, you can even get served if you’re not paying attention. That’s probably what made this such a Stumper. Hey, did you know this is the movie Jenna Dewan met her (now ex-) husband?
Ace of the Week10.2%“Keep calm. Turn off all the lights. Make sure the doors are locked. Hello, police.” |
“What's this? What's this?” THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS secures the double-dip accolade of being top win rate and top Ace rate. So, any beautiful rag-dolls out there who locked this up on the first clue, Jack is so very proud of you. Zero, too.
Here are the numbers for all the games last week.
Movie | Win % | Ace % |
|---|---|---|
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) | 85.9% | 10.2% |
Avatar (2009) | 83.1% | 6.1% |
Babe: Pig in the City (1998) | 80.6% | 1.0% |
The NeverEnding Story (1984) | 77.8% | 6.1% |
Challengers (2024) | 74.7% | 3.3% |
The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (1976) | 71.1% | 0.8% |
Step Up (2006) | 53.5% | 1.7% |
So there are 3 AVATAR movies released, two “in the works” and two more “mapped out” that may or may not be directed by James Cameron. There’s also the airbendyAvatars that are out there that add to the confusion, but the real demon in the works was this 2005/6 Spanish short film that was titled Avatar that almost EVERYBODY selected first by mistake. We assume even though it came out three years before the Cameron-helmed Navi story, that this director (Lluís Quílez) has been strongly cautioned (threatened with torture) not to make his own sequel and gum up the search results. He may also have been threatened to drop one of those L’s in his first name, as he should.

This one is NOT about bioluminescent ponytail intercourse. Booooo!
Babe 2: Electric Pigaloo (err, we mean Babe in the City) managed to hoof and rut to an 80% threshold. Probably would have been higher but animal control workers who felt disparaged by their portrayal in this movie stopped playing in protest and took the L outta spite.
The NeverEnding Story never stops. It just keeps on going. Much like the Nothing. The second time on CQ for the good old 1984 kinder-trauma fantasy epic, and after receiving all your emails and social media comments after the first time we decided to NOT include any references to Artax or the Swamp of Sadness. We had to shell out way too much money for emergency therapy sessions anyway. For those whose childhood was comprised by many rewatches of this movie, do check out the Unkind Rewind Podcast who devoted an episode to deep diving into the non-Disney Fantasia.
Challengers isn’t old enough to net a high score so the voices of Zendaya, O’Connor and Faist are quite baked into your brains. We were expecting the music that flittered in on that 4th quote might have helped get things higher, but we didn’t account for those of you overcome by memories of how sexy this movie got and had to quit playing.
The Boy in the Plastic Bubble is the butt of many jokes throughout the last four decades of movies and TV shows. Still, it won the mom in this an Emmy (posthumously, sadly) and it gave Travolta quite the kick to his career. Saturday Night Fever would be the very next year. That movie however did not (semi?) inspire a Paul Simon song the way this one did.
CQ Recommends

We recommend taking Falkor the Luck Dragon to work to skip the traffic.
Documentary film about Cambodian rock music in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impact of the Khmer Rouge regime and Cambodian genocide on the local music scene. This movie exists between the woefully depressing and the jubilant spirit of a devastated people. There’s hope everywhere, even in the darkness of war, and if you don’t know much about this topic, you could do a lot worse than this being your first foray. -Sean |
