Newsletter on a Wednesday? Much like pizza on a bagel, you can have newsletter anytime. We have been back and forth with the Newsie Union and despite their incessant need to turn every negotiation into a full song and dance number, we reached an agreement and at least in the shortime, the news should be on time in your email inbox Monday morning. If it’s got a mild aroma of filched cigarettes and Crackerjacks, you’re gonna have to complain to the newsie that delivered it. Leave time in your complaint for them to dance a rebuttal though.
This week in movie history Wings premiered in New York City 99 years ago. It was the first, and one of only two, silent films to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Can you recall the other? Either of them are gonna be hard as hell to do on CineQuote but don’t poke your index finger in our chest and say it can’t be done. We did Groundhog Day three damn days in a row so anything is doable.

A hard week when the top spot is in the mid 80 percentile, so despite the Sting pun quote most people needed to get this right, it was necessary for the player success rate of BEE MOVIE that we include it.

Actor Dennis Haysbert (often mistaken for Dennis Hastert in name only) was so good as Pedro Cerrano in Major League that three years later movie audiences said, “MORE!” Thus, he shows up as the other Yank on the Japanese team in MR. BASEBALL. There he is on the poster right next to the sexiest man in America (according to a poll in a 1986 Ladies Home Journal.) If you knew it was a baseball movie, but didn’t know the title, then you probably were in the 50% of players who struck out.

Another movie from the week, Lion King 2: Serengeti Boogaloo featured the quote:

That’s basically the opposite of what BEE MOVIE characters are spouting as Matthew Broderick talks like a segregationist. Well, at least in Bee Movie he does, but we all have our suspicions about his personal views…

THE LOST BOYS getting a C+ this week was not expected (Michael) as this movie is chronically imbibed by 80s kids and the horror faithful (Michael), and it JUST missed getting the Ace rate for the week so we decided to put it in the spotlight (sunlight?) Maybe (Michael) when they do the movie version of the Broadway musical it’ll land (Michael) a higher score. There’s an inside joke that Jason Patric’s character Michael is referred to by his name in The Lost Boys more than any other person in cinema. Well, someone made a supercut of it just to highlight how absurd the frequency is.

 Manhunter (1986) | FBI Agent Will Graham, recently retired, returns to duty to capture a serial killer. Thanks to a new 4k polish, Michael Mann’s fourth movie has resurfaced in movie theaters of late. Despite its claim as the first time Hannibal Lecter (or sometimes Lecktor) apprears onscreen, many many MANY people still have yet to see the gloomy, blue moonlight drenched, synthy thriller that gave William Peterson a career in crime scenes, and Tom Noonan a lifetime of people feeling nervous around him. We lost Noonan to the Great Beyond earlier this year so it’s as good a time as any to toast a departed actor by watching one of his best roles. -Sean |
